Singing Teacher, Vocal Consultant and Conductor

Emmanuel Lawler enjoyed a prolific international career as a tenor soloist performing extensively throughout Europe, the USA, and China etc on the world’s greatest stages including The Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln Centre, The Kennedy Centre, Chicago Symphony Centre, Boston Symphony Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Centre etc, and performing, broadcasting and recording a broad spectrum of repertoire from baroque to romantic opera to world premieres to folk, jazz, pop and film scores with orchestras including The London Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and RTÉ Concert Orchestra, as well as a diverse range of singers, actors, and musicians including Bono, The Edge, Chris de Burgh, Joe Dolan, Mel Gibson, Mary Coughlan, and Ronnie Drew to name just a few.

Emmanuel’s success as a teacher is demonstrated in his students’ successes at every level, including as international professional soloists performing on the very best stages. While his own vocal training was classical, Emmanuel is known for his relaxed personality - the opposite of the stereotypical classical ‘maestro’ teacher.  Emmanuel always enjoyed different styles of music and his work as a performer and singing teacher has seen him working with all kinds of singers from beginners to internationally acclaimed professionals, and from boy / girl bands to musical theatre stars and opera singers.

“We all have the same physiology and so the fundamentals of vocal technique are the same for us all!  The differences are only in how we choose to use our technique and talents... that's just 'style' - and every singer should have the confidence and vocal freedom to develop their own individuality, and their own unique style, voice and personality as a performer.  But that confidence only comes with clear knowledge and certainty about your voice, how it works, and how to use it.”

“Everything Emmanuel teaches is focused on using proven vocal techniques and up-to-date voice science.  This helps singers at every level from beginner to international professional achieve the freedom to express themselves with their voices.  Developing breath control, extending range, power, projection and expression are all parts of his proven system of teaching that sees the singer’s confidence and enjoyment grow alongside their abilities as a performer.”

In his performing career on the world’s top stages Emmanuel proved the real-world effectiveness of the techniques he teaches. With so much experience as a performer and over two decades experience as a lecturer in singing, producing highly successful international professional singers, Emmanuel now plans to share those skills with as many singers as possible by sharing his knowledge online as well as in person.

Background:

Emmanuel grew up in Dublin where he now lives with his wife and two sons. His musical life began as a boy chorister in The Palestrina Choir of Dublin's Pro-Cathedral.  Within months of joining the choir his life as a soloist had taken off and he performed in concerts and opera at home and abroad as a boy.  Choral music and vocal technique for choral singing is an area of special interest for Emmanuel, and choral workshops feature regularly in his schedule.  Having trained in Ireland and the UK Emmanuel sought out the ultimate Bel Canto training from the very finest source - the same 'stable' as Luciano Pavarotti.  And so in 1990 and 1991 he studied in Italy under Pavarotti's hero, the great Carlo Bergonzi. This classic Bel Canto Technique brought Emmanuel many standing ovations on the world's greatest stages and an ever-busy diary of engagements with many of the world's greatest musicians and orchestras.

Emmanuel became interested in vocal teaching while living the life of a busy international tenor based in London.  Teaching began with other singers asking his advice on their voices and singing.  They recommended him to friends and soon he gained a reputation as a brilliant voice teacher as well as singer.  In addition to his vast experience as a performer and the very best vocal training, he also holds top qualifications in music, voice and vocal teaching. An honours graduate of the National University of Ireland,  First Class Honours MA in Music, and Licenciate and Fellow of Trinity College London, Emmanuel joined the staff of the TU Dublin Conservatoire in 2001 shortly after returning to live in Ireland, and initially combined international performing engagements with a Lectureship in Singing.

With his students enjoying international success performing on stages such as The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, The Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall etc, and his services in demand for guest lectures, masterclasses, adjudicating etc,

Emmanuel ultimately retired from performing as an international tenor soloist to spend more time with his wife and sons and focus on his teaching work. However his vast performance experience, skills, and knowledge of choral music and techniques soon saw him back in action on stage as a choral conductor, and in 2022 he was appointed Director of Choirs in Terenure College, Dublin, a position which he holds in addition to his Lectureship in Voice in the TUDublin Conservatoire.

As well as to his work as a choral conductor and his teaching work with gifted students and top professional singers, Emmanuel’s interest in Vocal Pedagogy has seen a number of highly successful singing teachers emerging under his guidance.  These former students are now enjoying teaching success in Ireland, The UK, The USA, Germany, Italy and China, further enhancing Emmanuel's international reputation as a master teacher.

Alongside his classic Bel Canto training Emmanuel is deeply committed to voice science and vocal health and wellbeing, and this is central in his teaching.  He has worked with singers in need of vocal rehabilitation and lectured and collaborated with other categories of voice professionals including ENT Surgeons and Speech and Language Therapists.

“Every singer, like every person, is unique.  Great teaching combines the finest artistic skills and techniques perfected by great singers over centuries with the very latest voice science and practical, down-to-earth advice to help every singer in every style to release their voice and express their emotions and unique gifts with freedom and ease.”

"Whether I'm working with elite international soloists preparing for major performances on the international stage or guiding a young person at the start of their journey as a singer, everything I teach comes from proven Bel Canto technique as used by the world's greatest singers supported by the very latest voice science."
